Planetary Scientist and member of the Mars Exploration Rover team, Dr. Jim Bell visits the Orlando Science Center to present Postcards from Mars: Using Rovers to Explore the Mysteries of the Red Planet. He’ll be presenting his findings on the dynamic globe projection system in the Science Center’s  Science on a Sphere exhibit.

As a member of the Mars Exploration Rover team, Dr. Bell serves as the lead scientist in charge of the Panoramic camera (Pancam) color stereoscopic imaging system on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers. Bell is also a member of the camera team for the Curiosity rover, which is NASA’s next Mars mission scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral next week on November 25. He is also a professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and an adjunct professor in the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

WHEN:          Saturday, November 26 – 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

WHERE:       Orlando Science Center, 777 East Princeton Street, Orlando, FL 32803 – Science on a Sphere exhibit inside Our Planet, Our Universe on Level 4

SCIENCE ON A SPHERE:
This exhibit connects guests of all ages to earth and space science through a dramatic visual presentation using a six-foot suspended sphere and state-of-the-art projection technology, which gives the illusion of holographic projection. Explore our planet’s dynamic landscape and weather, tour the solar system and understand the complex relationship between our planet and its sister worlds. The Orlando Science Center is one of only a small number of museums around the world with this display.

DR. BELL AND THE MARS ROVERS:
In January 2004, NASA successfully landed twin rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, on Mars in the most ambitious mission of robotic exploration ever attempted. Dr. Bell is in charge of the rovers’ panoramic cameras and has had an amazing front row seat for their adventures. In his presentation, he will share his favorite images and behind-the-scenes stories of these missions. He will also discuss the major scientific findings made by the rovers, which are still exploring Mars to this day.

COST:            Dr. Bell’s presentation is included in general admission to the Orlando Science Center, which costs $17 for adults and $12 for youth (ages 3-11). Tickets also provide access to all the science center’s films, exhibits and live programs, including Harry’s Big Adventure and GUITAR: The Instrument That Rocked the World.
